OBSTETRIC
Our unwavering commitment to the protection of the health of the pregnant woman and the fetus.
The Vythoulka-Liveri Clinic is housed in the city of Zakynthos and is staffed by the experienced and specialized Gynecologist – Obstetrician Vythoulka Konstantino.
The doctor, together with his trained medical team, is able to offer the appropriate support needed by a pregnant woman and the fetus, from the prenatal stage to the childbirth phase.
1st visit of a pregnant woman
Prenatal care should begin in the first trimester, ideally before 10 weeks of gestation. Its early start is useful for determining in pregnancy reference measurements(e.g. weight, blood pressure, laboratory evaluation of women with chronic diseases) and to provide early support and intervention when required.
Also, when there is an underlying chronic disease, it is recommended, if possible, to consult with the doctor of the respective specialty. Scheduling obstetric visits during pregnancy monitoring is also key.
In an uncomplicated, smoothly progressing pregnancy, it is considered that 8 visits to the obstetrician – gynecologist throughout the pregnancy are sufficient.
Under conditions requiring the use of specific health protocols (COVID-19 pandemic) the number of visits may be limited only to those requiring the mandatory physical presence of the pregnant woman in obstetric clinics (ΕΜΓΕ, Directive No 43: www.hsog.gr).
Prenatal check - up at the initial visit of the pregnant woman
-
Taking a detailed obstetric and individual medical history, including vaccinations, information on hereditary diseases and substance use, history of infections and exposure to teratogens.
- Previous surgical and gynecological history.
- Family medical history.
- History of present pregnancy.
- Travel to areas endemic for malaria, tuberculosis, Zika virus.
- Exposure to potentially toxic environmental factors.
- Psychosocial information.
- Personal and family history of fetal fathers.
- The physical examination should include measuring blood pressure and recording the mother's weight and height. The calculation of body mass index (BMI, BMI: kg/m2) facilitates advice on appropriate weight gain during pregnancy.
- Ultrasound examination, which contributes to the detection of intrauterine pregnancy and exclusion of ectopic pregnancy. In addition, it can determine whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy, detect fetal heart function after 6 weeks, and sonographically determine gestational age, based on the fetal crown rump length after 8 weeks.
-
Laboratory testing:
- Complete blood count.
- Determination of blood group / Rhesus.
- Hemoglobin electrophoresis and sickle test.
- General urinalysis and urinalysis culture.
- Serological testing of pregnant women for the detection of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV and syphilis.
- Control of antibodies to rubella virus, cytomegalovirus and toxoplasma to guard against exposure if a pregnant woman is found not to be sensitized. It is recommended to vaccinate the woman against rubella before pregnancy or after the end of pregnancy.
- Culture of vaginal-cervical secretion.
- TSH measurement at the first visit. All pregnant women should have a history of conditions or medications associated with thyroid dysfunction.
- – Recommendation to avoid alcohol, stop smoking, modify harmful medicinal products for the fetus and inform about the negative effects of taking addictive substances on pregnancy and start folic acid and / or multivitamin preparations.
