Epidemiological studies have shown that the incidence of palpable thyroid nodules is about 5% in women and 1% in men living in areas of the world with iodine sufficiency (1,2).<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, high-resolution ultrasound (US) can detect thyroid nodules in 19% -68% of randomly selected individuals, with higher frequencies in women and the elderly (3,4).<\/p>\n<p>The clinical importance of diagnostic investigation of thyroid nodules lies in the need to exclude thyroid cancer, which occurs in 7% -15% of cases depending on age, gender, radiation exposure history, family history and other factors.<\/p>\n<p>FNAC is a diagnostic selection procedure, in the evaluation of thyroid nodules, following clinical suggestion.<\/p>\n<p>The results are classified based on <u>\u201cthe BETHESDA SYSTEM for REPORTING THYROID CYTOPATHOLOGY\u201d (TBSRTC).<\/u><\/p>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Breast Fnac <\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of cystic or solid breast lesions is a minimally invasive low-cost office technique with the following indications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Diagnosis of inflammatory and non-neoplastic breast diseases e.g. abscess, fibrocystic lesion, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Diagnosis of benign breast neoplasms e.g. fibroadenoma.<\/li>\n<li>Diagnosis of malignancy.<\/li>\n<li>Disease staging \u2013 axillary lymph node.<\/li>\n<li>Analysis of estrogen and progesterone hormone receptors.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of HER-2neu receptors.<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring relapse or metastasis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nDisadvantages of the method:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unable to manage ductile carcinoma (DCIS) in situ from invasive ductile carcinoma.<\/li>\n<li>Difficult D \/ D DCIS from atypical pore hyperplasia (ADH).<\/li>\n<li>There is a chance that a lobular carcinoma, a mucous, etc.may escape diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty in accurately identifying some benign breast lesions.<\/li>\n<li>It is not used to investigate calcifications discovered by mammography.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nIn these cases, core biopsy is recommended.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><i>Attention! <\/i><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is always considered necessary to triple diagnostic evaluation of breast lesions and the correlation of clinical \u2013 imaging \u2013 cytological\/histological findings.<\/p>\n<p>The classification of results is based on the <u>YOKOHAMA SYSTEM<\/u>.<\/p>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Salivary gland FNAC<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a useful, minimally invasive and low-cost technique in salivary gland lesions. It mainly helps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The identification of neoplastic lesions from non-neoplastic lesions.<\/li>\n<li>In the selection of cases for surgical treatment and in the planning-severity of the operation.<\/li>\n<li>Additional tests of Immunocytochemistry, molecular control, etc.can be performed on the material.<\/li>\n<p>The classification of results is based on the <u>MILAN SYSTEM<\/u>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>Lymph node FNAC<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<p>Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a useful, minimally invasive and low-cost method in lymph node lesions. It mainly helps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To confirm that the lesion e.g. in the head cervix is lymph node.<\/li>\n<li>To exclude or confirm metastatic disease.<\/li>\n<li>To diagnose reactive lymph node hyperplasia.<\/li>\n<li>To diagnose inflammatory lesions.<\/li>\n<li>To diagnose and \/ or suspect lymphomas using Immunocytochemistry, knowing the limitations that exist.<\/li>\n<li>For staging lymphomas.<\/li>\n<li>To follow up low grade lymphomas and their transition to high grade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<strong><em><b><i>Attention!<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lymph node that is still swollen beyond 3 months, even if it has a benign cytological result, should be further tested and clinical laboratory and imaging findings should always be co-evaluated.<\/p>\n<p>The classification of the results is based on the <u>SYDNEY System<\/u>.<\/p>\n<li><b><\/b><strong><b>FNAC of other head-neck lesions<\/b><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a useful minimally invasive low &#8211; cost technique in head-neck lesions.
